Position SummaryThe Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization such as IVVC-Integrated Volt Var Control, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer position is fully competent in the use of engineering concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve. This position will assist in providing technical leadership and guidance to multiple roles in the Distribution Control Center (DCC), such as DCC Grid Engineers, DCC Shift Supervisors, DCC Grid Operators, and DCC Grid Techs, etc. The position supports communications across several internal departments in addition to external customers and is responsible for developing and implementing business plans and training initiatives for the Company regarding DCC, ADMS/DMS initiatives and assigned projects. Areas of expertise, in addition to Distribution engineering knowledge, include Distribution Management System (DMS - IVVC), PI historian data, and the Distribution Switching & Tagging (S&T) Manual. They are responsible for independent analysis of complex plans for system operations with voltage levels typically 34.5KV and below. Serves as a mentor to other engineers. Provides leadership by building functional teams and providing DCC insight to support projects. Provides DCC input on future project needs, size, location, and timing of system investment to balance economic, environmental, regulatory constraints, and reliability needs.
Responsibilities
- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
- Serve as technical SME (subject matter expert) for Distribution system operations. Primary responsibilities in DCC include completion of clearances and switching requests, ensuring the collaboration with Grid Techs and IVVC Grid Engineers to deliver effective, safe operation of the distribution system. This includes input for Integrated Volt Var Control (IVVC) System equipment and other out of service equipment prioritization. Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
- Solve complex problems, manage work, and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
- Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
- Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and develops standards relevant to area of assignment. Keeps abreast of new developments, technologies procedures and equipment.
- Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally
Required/Basic Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Engineering
- In addition to required degree, six (6) years related work experience
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or
- Masters degree in Masters in Engineering or
- In addition to desired degree, 6 years related work experience
- Professional Engineer and/or Project Management Professional
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Proficient in engineering theories and principles
- Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations,
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient in principles of project management
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE)
- Experience in the utility industry
Working Conditions
- In DCC Control Room
- Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a designated company facility.
Specific Requirements
- Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE
- Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
- A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
- Proficient in principles of project management
- Proficient in power engineering theories and principles
- Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
